Russell Square was 'officially' started in August of 2001, by frontman Aaron Crawford and lead guitarist Jesse Weed. The two have been playing and writing together since 1998 when they played together in the now defunct indie group Everyday Newborn. After Everyday Newborn broke-up in January of 2000, the two decided to start a new project which took nearly two years to put together. This new 'project' took on many different faces, names, and sounds, but ultimately grew into what is now known as Russell Square. Inspired party by chance, and party by their obvious UK influence, they named their new project after a park in England called Russell Square.
In July of 2001, they recruited long-time friend Daniel Tuesta to play acoustic guitar. Then after several auditions and a month of impatiently waiting, they finally landed drummer Aaron 'Deuce' Hingtgen, and bassist Andre Loranc. They spent the next several months working with producer Scott Meder (Grammatrain, Sherri Youngward, Jesse Sprinkle), fine-tuning their sound and preparing to hit the studio in December. January would bring some big changes to the band. First was the departure of Daniel & Andre, and secondly was the arrival of the latest addition to the band (and completing the current line-up), bassist Grant Yeager.
The band would describe their sound as American Brit-Rock, with a touch of the Seattle Emo sound. 'It's what you would probably get if you crossed a band like Delirious, with a band like Sevenday Jesus.' The band also sites influences from such legendary artists as U2, and Pink Floyd, as well as modern wonders such as Radiohead, Deftones, and Cold Play (to name a few). Added to a good dose of Christian morals, and lyrics that touch on the day to day issues that so many people deal with today, it makes for a unique addition to the Christian music community.
