ZOX, an emerging foursome from Providence R.I., uniquely blends rock, reggae, punk, and classical. The band's begun to shake up clubs and colleges across the US. Winners of the 2003 'Best Breakthrough Act' in the Providence Phoenix Best Music Poll, ZOX combines the talents of San Francisco-bred singer/songwriter/guitarist Eli Miller, conservatory-trained violinist Spencer Swain, drummer (and band namesake) John Zox and virtuoso bassist Dan Edinberg to create a sound that is energetic, sophisticated, fun, and above all, entirely original.
Since its inception in the basement of a Brown University dorm in 1999, ZOX has developed into a full-time touring act, successfully lacing the searing melodies of classical violin into high-energy reggae-infused rock at their 200+ college/club shows a year. Think Sublime meets Led Zeppelin meets The Police meets Beethoven.
The band has opened for such national acts as Rusted Root, Dispatch, Guster, Goldfinger, Common, The Starting Line, Further Seems Forever, and The Sugar Hill Gang, and performed to sold out crowds at such landmark clubs as Boston's Paradise and Providence's Lupo's (1500 capacity). In addition, ZOX has won numerous awards, including Best Band 2003 at www.campusawards.com, Best Local Breakthrough Act 2003 in the Providence Phoenix, and first place in the 95.5 WBRU Annual Southern New England Rock Hunt out of 200 bands (www.wbru.com).
