Zen Mothers began in 1995 in Grand Forks ND as an acoustic trio that
played a variety of unusual instruments, including
hand drums and a Celtic harp. A year later, Zen Mothers
decided to go electric and concentrate on converting
their acoustic sound to rock instruments: bass, guitar,
drums, and blues harmonica. They were discovered by
a local independent label and recorded their first
CD with both acoustic and electric tracks in Dec. 1998.
After the record company failed to promote them
as a jamband, Zen Mothers became independent and
began touring the country, playing gigs at the
jam-friendly bar, Quixote's, in Denver and other
venues in Tempe, Flagstaff, Albuquerque, Omaha,
St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Minneapolis. They
also played the Harvest Festival at Harmony Park,
Geneva MN in September 1999 and will be back next
year.
Currently, Zen Mothers is working on a new, independent
CD which should be ready in the Spring, just in time for
festival season. Zen Mothers will continue to tour
nationally and will have the new CD up on jam stations
around the country, just as the first one was.
