WILDERNESS
Band Biography

  • From: LINCOLN, UK
  • No. of Members: 3
  • Year Established: 1998

Wilderness are a solid Vocal/Instrumental trio playing Irish Music with a passion that can only come from a true love of Celtic music and culture. Wilderness have taken traditional folk songs from as long ago as the 1700’s and transformed them into modern Irish Folk/Folk-Rock pieces. To try and pigeon hole this trio could be a problem, as their style seems to appeal to Traditionalists and Contemporary folk devotees alike, without mentioning the fact that they play folk music in a rock style. Wilderness play to real Irish crowds and non Irish alike, with the same results. All you would have to do, to see the effect that this Trio have on their audiences, is to see how difficult it is for them to get away, at the end of the night. (even after playing several encores). Wilderness have influences from a wide variety of backgrounds and lifestyles, ranging from Scottish folk to Heavy Metal and from Country to Classical going through Folk, Swing, Blues and Punk on the way. When not actually out on the road Wilderness spend all their free time in the studio either Recording new albums or learning New Material. Wilderness take their show seriously and feel the need, to continually bring new songs to their venues with an average of four news songs being added each week, to the considerable repertoire that they have (see attached list) Wilderness as said before, play to both Irish and Non Irish audiences alike and where required can provide a Night of Irish Rebel Music. Wilderness play songs from artists such as The Pogues, The Dubliners, The Clancy Brothers, Goats Don’t Shave, Christy Moore, The Saw Doctors and The Waterboys along with a good mixture of traditional songs interspersed with some of their own material. The normal line up for Wilderness is Kenn Gordon (6 String Guitar, 12 String Guitar, Banjo, Omnichord, Bodhran Bass and Lead Vocals). Mark Coleshaw (Keyboards, Omnichord Bass and Backing Vocals) Michelle Fogg (Keyboards Bass and Backing Vocals). When a large band is required Wilderness can also come with extra members Julie Cassiday (Low Irish Flutes, Penny Whistle, Percussion and Vocals) Mike Stanford (Bass and Vocals) Billy James (Guitar, Banjo, and Vocals)

THE BAND MEMBERS Kenn Gordon: Kenn Has his roots in Scottish Folk and Country and Western Music having his first paid gig in 1968 at the early age of 13 years (The Stags Head Golspie) That night he got the lordly sum of five pounds. Kenn went on to join Hector McCrae’s Scottish Dance Band playing Bass to Traditional Scottish Music. Then after two years joined a group called Country Sound with Davey Duff , this was later to become one of the UK’s biggest country groups “Colorado” after joining the RAF Kenn joined up with the Rock Band Steamroller with a minor chart success called “Steamroller” after leaving the RAF and went back to Country Music with RAVEN playing Lead Guitar in this Sutherland based Band. In mid 1980 Kenn moved to Lincoln and reforming RAVEN this time playing Rhythm Guitar and singing Lead Vocals. Work schedules of some band members forced Raven to disband and Kenn Joined Al Lincoln to form KALLEN a traditional Country and Western Duo. After two years Allan retired due to ill health. Kenn stayed solo for two years until meeting Mark Coleshaw and in 1998 Wilderness was born as a Country / Irish Music Duo later to be joined by Michelle Fogg and to specialize in Irish Music. On moving to Lichfield Mark was influenced more and more by Punk and New Wave music and joined a Local punk band called “Snot 4U” playing Bass Guitar and Synth. The band broke up due to a lack of commitment from two of the members. Mark went on to form his own Band “Hand Of The Devil” by now Mark was playing Keyboards and Synth. After joining the RAF mark became more influenced by the Folk scene in the UK and Ireland and after leaving the RAF worked as a Roadie for several Top Irish Bands including the Furys. Mark moved to Lincoln with his family and began to roadie and sound engineer for Kenn but within 6 months he was playing Keyboards once again and Wilderness was born. Michelle Fogg: The newest member of the band Michelle is the baby of the band. Michelle is a Lincoln lass and grew up in and around Lincolnshire her musical tastes were shaped by her love of classical music and “Old Style” Traditional English Folk Music (You know the kind where you sing with your finger in your ear or if you don’t like it your fingers in both ears) After learning to play Piano Michelle tried her hand at Blues and then Jazz Fusion. Although Michelle had not played with any bands but has done a lot of studio work with “Bayou Recording Studios Thorne” and “Quagaars Studios Lincoln” Michelle joined Wilderness at the start of 2000 and has enhanced the already full sound that Wilderness had her Fusion side can be heard in many of the traditional reels that they play.
