Transient Frank was formed in May 2001. Originally a four piece group with a young drummer named Jake Hayden, TF has progressed into a 6 piece band with a new drummer. We are more or less a progressive jamband that combine aspects of several musical genres. This along with a strong emphasis on groove and improvisation helps to define the somewhat hard to pin down TF sound.
TF currently consists of Danny Ball on guitar and vocals, Tony Dilk on guitar, Phil Powers on drums, Kelly Smelser on bass, Lindsey Graham on vocals, and Janet Wickliff on vocals. The musical diversity amoung all of us make for a great conglomeration of styles and influences that make every new TF tune something unexpected and fun.
Stylistically, Transient Frank brings in a number of influences from jazz to hardcore, but the strongest influences lie in the realm of improvisation and jambands with a very strong emphasis on groove. Some influential artists and bands to note are The Grateful Dead, Phish, moe., Dream Theater, Rush, Pink Floyd, The Disco Biscuits, Medeski, Martin & Wood, Frank Zappa, Bela Fleck & The Flecktones, Les Claypool w/ or w/o Primus, Ornette Coleman, Yolk, Prince, Canderia, and Dillinger Escape Plan. The TF sound isn't entirely easy to pin down, but perhaps it could be best described as psychedelic funk with 'a touch of the garlic...'
