The Visit started out as an unstructured weekend jam for local musicians. Founder and guitarist Will G. started inviting jazz musicians to jam at his place back in mid-1999, mainly as a way to play more and with different people. A few of the players clicked and started meeting regularly.
Since the band practiced in an art gallery (Will lives in 57 N Fine Art in NW DC), it was noticed by the neighbors and The Visit started playing gallery shows and art openings. Everyone was busy with other projects but this one took off.
Before the melting pot began: Will was a hard-bop guitarist. Tracy was a funk/rap bassist. Matt was a Nashville guitarist. Gordy was a funk and jazz trumpeter. Andrew was a straight-ahead jazz drummer.
Now we are all this and more.... Our sound can be described as an odd mix of old-school bop, rap and funk, Latin beats and bossas, and jamming improv. It's an interesting show.
