The Val Ramos Flamenco Ensemble is the premier instrumental, 'flamenco fusion' ensemble in the United States. The group performs primarily in the Northeast but is now gaining national and international recognition as one of the finest 'flamenco fusion' ensembles in the world.
The group features the talents of Val Ramos (flamenco guitarist), Jose Ramon Ramos (flamenco guitarist), Kris Jensen (flutist), Carlos Hernandez Chavez (bass), Jose Berrios (bongos), Jose de Santos (singer) and Carlos Martin Rebollar (cajon). The group draws musical expertise from a variety of musical styles and influences including Latin music and jazz. Under the musical direction of flamenco guitar virtuoso VAL RAMOS, the ensemble has performed at major international music festivals including the International Festival of Arts and Ideas and OpSail200 Festival.
The ensemble performs original instrumental arrangements featuring guitars, bass, flute and percussion as well as contemporary flamenco material with a flamenco singer and cajon percussion. The sound of the ensemble revolves around the lead and rhythm guitars which set the backdrop for exciting flute improvisational lines. The more traditional pieces add the talent of Spanish flamenco singer JOSE DE SANTOS with material reminiscent of the style of KETAMA. This is an ensemble still in evolution.
In 1995, the ensemble released an album entitled BORICUAS FLAMENCOS (under the PIRAM label). The ensemble is now getting ready to record its second album which is expected to be released in April 2001.
