The Kelvins are a new, all original rock band from Hartford, Connecticut. Our music is a blend of old school and new, our emphasis on writing songs, and our sound raw but tight. With the staggering amount of groove bands, rapcore, pop alternative, and other 'wave riding' acts in the region; we seek to offer an alternative. We are not 'retro' '80's' or punk, nor are we aging, pot-bellied rockers who hope to recall the glories of our past. Expect no long, drawn-out solos. Expect no 'hey, that sounds exactly like...' melodies. Expect rock. Our members: Greg Garcia (guitars/vocals), Jay Wood (drums), Mike Ringland (bass) and Mark Tallberg (Guitars/vocals) bring extensive experience to the band. Our
show consists of only original material. We are not political. We are not pissed at the universe. We are not super happy. We are not posessed by demons. We like breakfast, preferrably at 3am.
'So who do you sound like?' Okay, for the record, every musician hates this question. We all want to think we're so completely original that no comparisons can be drawn, but if you've never heard us I suppose it's the only way to understand. Hartford Advocate writer Tina Tormey recently wrote a feature article about the Kelvins, summing us up in her own words. Here is an exerpt:
'Since the band's debut at Steve and Sully's in May, the Kelvins have played five shows and created a buzz at every one. No wonder. All four members are accomplished musicians who have played in local bands like HoneyRyder and Funk Food. Drummer Jay Wood, 29, even played with Edie Brickell while living in Texas...The Kelvin sound is at once difficult to describe and yet unmistakable. Anyone who has heard one of their songs can easily recognize others. It's a blend of classic rock (David Bowie and Led Zeppelin) and modern rock (Nirvana, Foo Fighters and Stone Temple Pilots) --straightforward and uncomplicated...Garcia, 34, sings from his gut, his voice clear and strong. Wood is always ready to provide a flashy drum fill. The band is polished and professional'
(Tina Tormey Hartford Advocate 7.6.00).
We hope we live up to her glowing praise.
The Kelvins first CD is being created for an estimated January 2001 release. With 8 original songs, it represents the range of our unique sound. From the mellow ballad 'Anniversary' to the hard groove of 'Turnabout' to the all out rock of '10 Feet Small', these songs have been wowing crowds all over Connecticut since we wrote them early in 2000. When it is released, we will be expanding our gigging schedule to cover Boston, NYC, Providence RI, and beyond.
The name 'The Kelvins' comes not from the unit of measurement (as is widely believed) but from a 60's episode of Star Trek. The Kelvins were an alien race with naughty intent.
