Psychafunkadoobalicious. 'The band can segue from funk, to explosive, creative fusion to laid-back hip hop, and you're never left wondering if it's the same band from song to song,' says Mike Breen of Cincinnati's City Beat. 'Though they've been compared to like-minded acts like Groove Collective, Phish and Medeski Martin & Wood, Guy Smiley's the only name you'll remember after listening or seeing them live.'
Formed in 1994, Guy Smiley has been compared to groove/jazz artists from Stevie Wonder and Tower of Power to Medeski Martin & Wood and Groove Collective. The band's horn section is made up of Patrick Dolan on alto sax, flute and vocals, Chris West on soprano and tenor sax, flute and bass clarinet and Ryan Stiles on Bari Sax. Jim Kolacek plays drum, Jon Grant plays bass and Graham Spice rounds out the rhythm section with keys, guitar, vocals and trumpet.
The band has just released their second CD, GSBE LIVE. Recorded on December 1, 2000 at Jacklegs in Nashville, Tennessee, GSBE LIVE showcases the band's energetic live performance. GSBE LIVE has received great reviews from Pauserecord.com, Indie-music.com, Jambase.com, the HomeGrown Music Network and other print media. The band will continue touring the eastern portion of the US through September of 2001 when they will expand their touring area to include the Mountain States, reaching toward the west coast by year-end.
