It's November of 1998 and your dreams have all taken shape. Over the course of the past twelve months, your band released their major label debut and saw it go platinum on the strength of a hit single. You garnered heavy airplay on MTV, performed on national television in front of millions of viewers, and best of all, you landed a tour slot opening for Metallica- the very band that inspired you to pick you instrument and play. For the average artist, such achievements usually mark the summation of an entire career- if they're lucky. However, for guitarist Todd Whitener, bassist Jesse Vest and drummer Matt Taul- three twenty-year-olds from Louisville, Kentucky- it was a reality and it was just the beginning- or so they thought. A few weeks later, all of it- the band, the partying and the good times- was crushed beneath the weight of artistic differences and legal wrangling. The three musicians, formerly known as Days of the New, returned to Kentucky- broke, disillusioned and back at square one.
Stories that begin this way usually end in scandal, bitter tragedy and an episode of 'Behind the Music.' Instead, this trio's tale goes a different way. Defying expectations, they regrouped, recruited a new lead singer and began to write. Things quickly fell into place, and after naming thenselves Tantric, the quartet signed a recording contract with Maverick Records late last year. 'We could've fallen apart very easily and each gone our own way,' says guitarist Todd Whitener. 'The fact that we were able to stay together says alot about the band's spirit and determination.'...
