Tama
Band Biography

  • From: Dakar, Paris , Hamburg, New York, France
  • No. of Members: 4
  • Year Established: 1990

TAMA (When not touring, based in France)The duo TAMA was created by brothers Badou and Pape Armand Boye. The brothers were born and raised in a small city located about 28 km from Dakar, the capital of Senegal.

The Boye brothers soothed since their childhoods by ocean breezes, found themselves marked by the sounds of roots reggae, mbalax ( a Senegalese rhythm ) and soul. Unlike others who continue to work solely in the confines of pre-existing sounds, the Boye brothers were able to create an original style.

In 1997 with their first album Woyou Talibé, recorded in Youssou Ndour’s Dakar studios, they introduced the African market to a new sound. That new sound opened a generation to new acoustic influences and possibilities. It is essentially a blend of all the musical forces that influenced the Boyes but most strongly bears the stamp of acoustic folk with an undeniably unique African rhythm.Badou and Pape Armand are lyricists, composers and producers of their own works. Their lyrics are sung in Wolof, English and French and deal with themes including love, human suffering and political issues of conflict and peace.

With their two acoustic guitars, their original voices and their unique mbalax rhythms, TAMA continues to entertain and touch its international audience.
