Strangefolk percolated out of the vibrant music scene found in the arts-friendly community of Burlington, VT. Of the band's current 5 members, Jon Trafton on guitar/vocals, Luke 'Patchen' Montgomery on guitar/vocals, Erik Glockler on bass/vocals, Luke Smith on drums and Don Scott on keyboards, only Jon, Erik and Luke have been on board since the early 90s when the band formed. Patchen and Don joined the mix in 2000 after Strangefolk's original rhythm guitarist left to persue a life free from being on the road for the majority of the year.
This is a band that speaks to the emotions of their listeners, plain and simple. Intense, roller coaster improvisations spanning the spectrum from sorcerous guitar solos to folky acoustic fingerpicking pieces provide quite a range for the music lover's ear. In addition to mind-blowing instrumentals, insightful and poetic lyrics draw the listener in with tales of loves found, loves lost, disappointment, regret, longing and hope. It’s no surprise that every show leaves a lasting impression on those who see them play live. While Strangefolk's energetic yet down-to-earth stage presence does much to endear these five guys to their fans, but it’s the music that cements them as “strangers” (what their fans prefer to be called).
Strangefolk has built a solid and enthusiastic following through constant touring, word of mouth and live show trading. Much like the community formed around the Grateful Dead, their fan base has begun to take on a life of it’s own. Strangefolk regularly plays for sold out crowds all over New England. Their holiday run of shows saw packed houses in Vermont, Maine and the expansive 2,000+ capacity Worcester Palladium in Massachusetts. They are starting to see increasing crowds in northern California, Oregon and Washington state as well.
