Some have characterized Steffannie’s music as: “Smooth, Jazzy, Funky, Hypnotic and Meaningful”. I want to make music that meets people where they are, songs that are uplifting while transmitting my most raw and true feeling”.
When asked, what style would you characterize your music as, 'my style” – I can’t really put it in any other box. When people see me for the first time and they usually think I must be a gospel singer, but that’s not necessarily the case. My background includes gospel - yes, but it is also influenced by Christian rock, jazz, R&B, and world music of many different kinds. I grew up listening to reggae one day and heavy metal or even classical the next. My parents fed me on a steady diet of gospel and jazz while encouraging me to explore different genres of music; so needless to say, my style is to praise the Lord with the music He places in my heart.
When did you start writing music? “I began writing music in my early teens. I didn’t have formal music training so I would write a song and hum the melody, and then I’d draw pictures of the piano keys on paper to put dots where my fingers would go for each and every song. It was long and painstaking, but that’s how I started writing”. Soon after she taught her self to read music and play the keyboard to compose her original music. Although she continued writing music, her focus for the past 10 years has been to faithfully lead the music ministry at her contemporary non-denominational church. “My background in contemporary Spirit filled praise and worship leading has encouraged me to finally step out this year to record my first demo CD. It took along time to get here, but I thank God for the journey”.
