While attending the University of Mississippi in November of 1999, guitarists Chris Stiener and Nick Ulmer, along with bass player Tommy Turan and drummer William Gates met for an impromptu jam session. The chemistry of the four was instantaneous and the sound intense. Immediately the group started writing instrumental songs centered around heavy grooves, strong beats and extended jams. Recognizing their own potential, the jam sessions continued for several months with their list of original music quickly expanding and the group’s intensity ever strengthening.
The final piece of what is now known as Second Guess was found in New Orleans native and keyboardist Jeff Parker. With his roots deeply entrenched in New Orleans music, Jeff added the funk-filled New Orleans sound that his bandmates had been seeking. With the addition of Parker, combined with Gates’ solid rhythm section, Turan’s intense bass lines, and Stiener and Ulmer’s fierce guitar work, the music of Second Guess was well established.
The band’s original songs draw heavily on their own musical influences including jazz, funk and rock.
While their influences are evident throughout Second Guess’ strong stable of original songs, their incredibly unique artistic style has enabled them to develop a sound that is very much their own
