Prophets Thumb is a duo originally from New York State and transplanted to the hills of West Virginia, consisting of Steve Buvoltz on acoustic guitar, and Patsy Buvoltz on various hand percussion, occasionally the banjo, and vocals. Their music is an original and surprising mixture of alternative/folk/rock with influences all the way from Led Zepplin and Grateful Dead to Joan Baez and Patty Smith. Steve spends hours on his guitar coming up with creative riffs and tunes, and the hard hitting, straight forward lyrics, all written by Patsy, cover the whole range of life experience--Love, human relations , politics, war, and living in general. Their music will definately make you think...
Steve played lead guitar professionally back in the day, in bands touring with the likes of Steppenwolf, Joe Walsh, and Three Dog Night. He also played with Big Brother and the Holding Company after Janis's death when the band re-formed for a time. He has spent the last couple years perfecting his own style of playing the acoustic guitar. The music sounds full and there are all sorts of little intricacies in the melodies. Sometimes you'd swear that there was more than one guitar.
Patsy has been involved with several high powered underground garage/jam bands including Tribal Axis which became quite well known in Central and Northern West Virginia and Eastern Ohio in the hip community. She also played and sang in a local old-time traditional band called the Calhoun County Kitchen Band for several years before helping to form Prophets Thumb. Patsy has surrounded herself with music and musicians for most of her life, and has a passion for 'speaking truth'. Her versatile voice can be soft, sweet and sad, or powerful, forceful, and strong...
Some of their more recent performances include venues such as Kanawahpalooza and the Empty Glass in Charleston WV, The Wood Festival and the Always Free Jamfest at the Horse of a Different Color Ranch in Calhoun County WV. Be prepared for some surprises. Sometimes you might want to dance, sometimes you might want to laugh, and sometimes you might even want to cry. But you'll definitely want more.
