With a combination of eclectic music, conscious lyrics and an energetic live show, Open Mind brings excitement to fans that want Music with Message and Muscle. Inspired by the sound and style of P-Funk, Bad Brains and Fishbone, Open Mind blazes their own trail by playing original hard-edged music that merges elements of hardcore, funk and rap. The group’s concept stems from each member’s taste for a variety of music and the desire to express themselves through music.
Five students at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, FL formed Open Mind in September 1991. They started out by writing original songs and playing obscure covers of their favorite bands. Through the years, the group has set themselves apart from the garden-variety bands, refining their ability to smoothly switch gears between songs featuring hardcore guitar riffs to songs with smooth funk horn lines. Lyrically, Open Mind drives home the distinctive point of their musical message by covering topics such as racial & social injustice, love and even the day in the life of a moose. As a result, defying categorization has become Open Mind’s modus operandi.
Open Mind’s set can be described as an exhilarating journey with heart-pumping jolts of musical fury. Open Mind has an energetic style that charges up the atmosphere and gets the audience involved. Fans with enough vigor dance excitedly, while others simply sit back and enjoy the music. Based in Tallahassee, FL., Open Mind has been playing regularly in venues throughout North-Central Florida, Georgia and Alabama, including performances at Florida A&M University and Florida State University. Open Mind has also opened for diverse local, regional and national acts such as Baccone Dolce’, Stuck Mojo and 24-7 Spyz. The music of Open Mind has been featured on WVFS (Voice of Florida State) Radio and WXSR (X-101.5) Radio, Tallahassee.
