NoPain
Band Biography

  • From: Kokomo, IN
  • No. of Members: 4
  • Year Established: 2000

There are many bands claiming to be funk bands, but is anyone really the one? With so many musical influences today it's hard to tell. I'm here to tell you that NoPain has picked up the flag of Funk and will carry on through the 21st century. With their dynamic sound, galvanizing stage presence, and groundbreaking albums they're prepared to get the job done!

NoPain's sound is built on a strong Funk foundation. The major influences that created the foundation are: the Funkadelics, Bootsy's Rubber Band, Ohio Players, and Prince among others. This formed a tight 'in-the-pocket' funk sound. In 2000, NoPain was formed with Ji 'Kickbottem' McGruder on drums, Jermaine 'PhatThumb' McGruder on bass, Eric 'Dr. Quick' McGruder on guitar, and Rochelle 'Spanish Rose' McGruder on keyboards. Together they recorded their first album, Unidentified Radio Wave. It contained funk, gospel, techno, and instrumentals that took you beyond everyday life. Unidentified Radio Wave showed that NoPain wasn't limited to just one sound. They played every gig they could find as far west as Fort Madison, Iowa to Cleveland, Ohio. Eric instilled the funk sound into the band along with the knowledge that, 'No man is different than you. You can do it too.' With this they took on projects that others said they couldn't do. They continued to experiment with their music, blending Jermaine's rock influence and Ji's hip-hop influence together with Eric's old school funk to create a harmony that transports the listener to a third dimension.

You'll know when NoPain is in the room as soon as they hit the door. They all have their own look and ways of getting people's attention. When they hit the stage, the whole atmosphere changes. Kickbottem starts to pump the blood for the party and the rest of the band keeps the blood flowing. PhatThumb lets everyone know that they are going to experience something they haven't heard before with his potent vocals. This all happens in a thick cloud of fog and lights that wash the band in a spectrum of colors. Every song from beginning to end is filled with passion and accents each member of the band. The show is all up in your face showing their diversity as the band plays songs ranging from Parliament to Rage Against The Machine, and everything in between.

NoPain has written and produced all four of their albums to date. Unidentified Radio Wave (2001), America Cried (2002), Funkaholic Addiction (2002) and Can You Smell It? (2003). All the albums have their own themes and are stages of growth with each one surpassing the last. They are not so much a collection of songs, but books that take you to another world with a lesson to learn. NoPain continues to pump the funk and show people a good time by blending the old school with the new to create a sound that will catapult them into new millennium. It's a wild ride and not to be missed by anyone ready to party!
