Nim is an original, heavy, melodic metal band based in Western Massachusetts. Formed in 2001 as an outlet for bottled creative talent, Nim started as a guy in a basement, overdubbing tracks on a digital recorder. Taking this to open-mic's to sing to the recorded musical tracks, Ed Horalek, the eventual singer and guitarist of Nim, found early acceptance of his voice, and the integrity of the music. Having played guitar and bass for a couple of local bands for nearly 15 years, and seeing very little reward for it, this new accolade was the spark that created the desire. Soon enough he had written 12 songs for the fledgling project, leaving behind 25 or so songs written with a prior band. Also his voice, which had been the subject of derision by those who doubted, became steadily stronger and more dynamic. But he still needed a band.
Ian Downs(Bass, backing vocal), joined quickly and the two set about learning the songs and their own craft as well as look for a drummer. Ian started late in learning to play but soon was playing with intensity and precision. Attending open mic's and practicing when possible, Ian's ability on the bass grows and his backing vocals become an integral part of the music, instead of an afterthought
It seemed that Nim might never get a chance, as drummer after drummer either didn't show up, lacked in musical ability, or simply hadn't the drive, took the center spot in this trio. Luckily, at a local musicians' network night at a music store, the two ran into a guy with the same drive to succeed as Ian and Ed. Mike Desroches(Drums, backing vocal), had recently reentered the music scene after a hiatus. He had been a part of a local band with limited ambition. Influenced by the drumming of Dream Theater, Pantera, and other older metal bands, he fit right in with the style of music. In no time he had learned the songs, improved them with fills and changes, and started doing backing vocals of his own.
With the addition of Paul Hebert on Lead Guitar, the music has developed a polish and proffesionalism that was lacking as a power-trio. Doing double duty as the guitarist for hard rock band 'Hard Licker', Paul kicks ass and takes names for the Nim crew now. At this point Nim plays regularly in the Western Massachusetts area, but seeks to broaden it's horizons by playing their first shows in New York, New Jersey, and Boston. The main obstacle has been money. To get great gigs it helps to have a decent demo. First trying to record in Ed's basement on a borrowed recorder, they quickly realized they'd have to come up with some money for a pro sound. Unfortunately they chose unwisely and ended up with a disk that was substandard, at best. Finally, they found a person who would cut them a break, and knew what he was doing. Presently, the CD is almost finished, with mixing and mastering left to do. With this CD, they hope to break out of this area and start building a wider fanbase and getting the exposure to varied audiences that the music requires. There is no limit to the heights that could be achieved.
