Nikki Rouse is an extraordinary songwriter, with an impressive vocal range that can whisper like Sara McLaughlin or soar like Nancy Wilson. Her unique finger-style guitar work and interesting melodies compliment her poetic lyrics, telling stories about life, love, relationships, social injustice and even an occasional political commentary. She has been compared with artists ranging from Patti Smith to Lucinda Williams, and Bonnie Raitt to early Heart, but she really has a style all her own, with influences from every style and genre of music.
Usually playing solo, Nikki also plays events with her full band, Suburban Blues. With a variety of class-act local musicians, she will at different times be accompanied by cello, percussion, stand up bass, harmonica, even cornet! Those who have played with her say her music challenges and moves them, giving a whole new perspective to thinking outside the box.
Nikki has won considerable recognition as a songwriter and singer since the debut of her CD, Chocolate and Morphine. Nominated for three WAMMIE awards as best contemporary folk vocalist, best contemporary folk CD, and best artwork, Nikki has also recently won an honorable mention in the Mid-Atlantic Songwriters Contest, and is currently a semi-finalist in the New Song Contest hosted by Performing Songwriter Magazine.
