New Monsoon
Band Biography

  • From: San Francisco, CA
  • No. of Members: 7
  • Year Established:

New Monsoon is a rising Bay Area band that combines driving world percussion rhythms blended with original acoustic and electric guitars, keyboards and a distinctive vocal style. The compelling grooves are fueled by Afro-Cuban and Indian percussion combinedwith melodies flavored by rock, funk, latin, blues and bluegrass stylings. The band is performing extensively around the Bay Area and rapidly building a dedicated fan base. New Monsoon’s unique sound elicits appreciative comparisons from fans of Santana, The Allman Brothers and Dave Matthews Band.

The band has also earned the admiration of acoustic music lovers by blending unique textures from banjo, dobro and didgeridoo into their sonic repertoire. The dynamic interplay between acoustic guitar and electric instruments, strong vocals and insightful lyrics and the infusion of North Indian and Afro-Cuban rhythms make an original sound that continues to excite new fans all over the country.

New Monsoon launched a summer of packed performances at great venues including The Boom Boom Room, The Sweetwater and The Catalyst and two knockout shows at the High Sierra Music Festival in July 2001. Since then, the band has been invited to headline many special events including a nationally broadcast four-city event honoring Jack Kerouac in Washington Square Park. Recently, the band has played a supporting slot for such luminaries as Yes at Concord Pavillion and James Brown and Sound Tribe Sector 9 at the Warfield. A frequent guest on stage with New Monsoon is Grammy winning saxophonist Paul McCandless (Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, Oregon, String Cheese Incident) and the band was joined for a set at Ashkenaz by guitar legend Henry Kaiser.

The success of their debut recording Hydrophonic has captured much attention, selling fast since its June release and getting regional airplay on California stations and across the country. Hydrophonic is completely original, entirely self-produced, and widely distributed through independent affiliates, including JamBase.Com and Homegrown Music Network.
