The music of Nap LaJoy is extremely diverse, touching such styles as sixties psychedelia, modern alternative, blues, country, and even reggae. Their music is fresh and new, yet always grounded by an abundance of timeless melodies. In addition to a wealth of original songs, Nap LaJoy are constantly adding to their large repertoire of cover songs, including songs by the Beatles, The Strokes, and Radiohead.
Nap LaJoy officially began playing together in the fall of 2004. The friendship and musical connections of Nap LaJoy’s core, however, has been established since the late 1990's when the members attended highschool together. In highschool, singer Devin O’Keefe, drummer Dave Newman, and guitar player Ben Toscano had been successful in spreading the popularity of their band, the Kick-Ties. After a year in various colleges, the members decided to transfer to Uconn for their common goal of creating music. Ben met bass player Kyle Charette in one of his classes and with this, the line up of NapLaJoy was complete.
In their short time playing together as a band, Nap LaJoy has accomplished much. They have given a live performance on the WHUS 91.7 radio station, have been featured on a compilation of local artists, have played dozens of shows across Connecticut and have gained exposure in Uconn’s newspaper, the Daily Campus. The following was written about Nap LaJoy’s performance in the annual Uconn Battle of the Bands. “Though much of the acts provided everything from hard rock to ska, Nap LaJoy brought a sound on the more alternative side. Their sound brought up the thoughts of British-influenced bands mixed in with the later jam styles of “Farmhouse” era Phish. Adding to that mix was an underscore of sunny indie rock a la the Eels, the band’s overall tone was in a different direction that those who came before. With psychedelic influences and an overall bright sound, the crowd was happy to have a brief respite from the crunching guitars.”
