The story of Mr. Nice Guy begins in the summer of 2000. Keith 'Skeeter' Scharlach decided to record the songs that he wrote in his freshman year at Alvernia College. At the time, Skeeter was a music teacher at Fred’s Music in Reading, Pa. His manager and friend, Rich Hill, took on the task of recording the first Mr. Nice Guy album. 'Up From Here’ is a non-conventional album of songs that don’t quite fit the standard stylistic pigeonholes. It is a synthesis of reggae, rock, and punk with a hint of hip-hop. The songs are heartfelt and personal, capturing the trials and tribulations of coming of age. But despite the lyrics’ authentic tell-all nature, there is a wry and almost surreal sense of humor about it. He paints a strange yet vivid portrait of those early college years. A lot of people identify with it. There was only one problem. Skeeter recorded all of the instruments on the album, and had to find a band to put the music on display.
Skeeter worked for a good part of 2003 trying to find just the right crew to be part of Mr. Nice Guy. All the while, they were writing songs that became staples in their live act, drawing new fans at every venue, as well as a underground tape-trading following. Two remarkable musicians who also want to leave their thumbprint in original music joined Mr. Nice Guy. Matt 'Duff' Heckman is the perfect drummer and personality to keep the music both straightforward and funky. The final member to join, 'Disco' Dean Herber, became the perfect bass player to complete the Mr. Nice Guy sound. Funkamunk’s bass lines in conjunction with Duff’s beats make Mr. Nice Guy’s rhythm section unique and distinguishable. Skeeter conducts lead vocals and lead guitar, and piano on a few songs.
To date, Mr. Nice Guy has played all over Berks County and most recently has gained some popularity on the 'Original' Philadelphia music scene. It is time to take the music to new people, new venues, and new places. Mr. Nice Guy is very determined and motivated to accomplish every goal together. This band will grow beyond their personal, physical and mental limitations, and reach audiences everywhere. The music speaks to people of every generation, both young and old. Mr. Nice Guy looks forward to the future.
