The Mike MacAllister Group is a new sound on the Boston and New England Jazz Scene with their debut release, Urban Sprawl. This CD offers its listeners an original, high-energy approach to modern jazz. MacAllister, the guitarist and composer, has a unique voice as a writer and an improviser. His music is a dynamic fusion of musical roots, from afro-Cuban and Brazilian styles to Rock, Funk, and Drum & Bass tied together by jazz-influenced improvisation and the Groups distinct sound.
Michael MacAllister, as a guitarist, has a flowing contemporary style, which draws upon the language of Jazz with the sensibilities of an upcoming musician who feels unrestricted by category. This album also features performances by a band of young talented musicians from all across the country. Gerad O'Shea, the alto and tenor saxophonist has a funky, melodic approach, which is reminiscent of players far beyond his years. Gerad shines as an improviser on 'The Jungle,' a saxophone feature that weaves together many musical styles. Martha Cipolla, the Group's marimbist and hand percussionist contributes the Marimba's unusual, earthy tone to the band's sound. One can hear the true quality of her playing on the introduction to the tile track, 'Urban Sprawl,' an extremely challenging passage that sounds effortless in her hands. The Group's foundation, bassist Jamie Bishop and drummer Jordan Perlson are the driving force behind the music. Jamie holds down the groove while Jordan delivers the excitement and energy, which propels every soloist to their peak. On 'Africa Minor' Jamie demonstrates his exceptional abilities as both an accompanist and a featured soloist.
With this release, the Mike MacAllister Group has taken a bold step into the world Jazz scene, displaying an energy and originality, which sets them apart from the rest. The CD, Urban Sprawl, is available on the Group's website and at Mike MacAllister Group concerts.
Boston Globe's Jazz Notes columnist, Steve Greenlee, called Urban Sprawl a 'gem', and went on to say it was '51 minutes of solid, ever-changing excursions into the land where jazz, rock, funk, and Afro-Cuban music converge.' The CD Release Concert is scheduled for Friday, July 5th at the Cambridge House of Blues™ at 96 Winthrop Street. The concert has a $10 cover charge and is 21+.
