The Carbondale quartet Madcap was formed when a few of Southern Illinois' wackiest musicians found each other, and began making music without boundaries. The result was a unique blend of jazz, funk, bluegrass, psychedelia, and more, as the band slips through the universe of music.
Madcap is defined as reckless or impulsive, which is the way that the band approaches performance. 'The moment is the most important thing about music,' says guitarist Zacc Harris,'the relationship that is built between the band and the audience is what truly makes the music flourish.' Harris and the boys, keyboardist Chris Miller, seven-string bassist Josh Dix, and percussionist Patrick Saddler, Harris are constantly pushing themselves further, in an effort to discover new grooves and other dimensions of sound, taking the audience by the hand and along for the ride. One minute they will be swinging with bop lines that Bird would be proud of, and the next, they could be stomping out some bluegrass for Bill Monroe, followed by a little psychedelic funk.
In April of 2000, Madcap put out its first studio album, Into the Nebula, a collection of twelve songs that make for 70 minutes of aural pleasure. The group is moving further out of its center in Carbondale in an effort to get its music out to everyone. Driven by an incredible cast of musicians with an even more incredible group dynamic, there is no telling how far into the nebula Madcap may go.
