From the lowcountry of South Carolina comes a unique and high-energy sound that is blazing new trails in the bluegrass world. In January of 1998, members of the Daly Planet rock band started opening their shows with some acoustic bluegrass to warm up the audience. The crowd response was tremendous, and that summer Lowcountry Boil Bluegrass Band was born.
It’s been full speed ahead ever since, as the band has traveled extensively up and down the East coast and played over 300 shows. They describe their music as 'bluegrass on crack' and combine the basic elements of rock n’ roll with a superb stage show and a high-energy performance that pushes bluegrass to a new level.
Since that special summer of ’98, the band has experienced a growth that can only be described as phenomenal. The have opened for such national acts as Vassar Clements, Blueground Undergrass, Donna the Buffalo, Marshall Tucker Band, Col. Bruce Hampton, Gordon Stone Band, and the David Nelson Band. During 1999 highlights on the bluegrass circuit have included MerleFest in N.C., HarvestFest in Atlanta, Enchanted Forest Festival in Ohio, and MagnoliaFest in Florida.
The band has exploded on the scene with their debut CD release Break Me off Some Bluegrass featuring the legendary Vassar Clements on fiddle. This fresh and innovative CD from Knot Known Records features Clements on six of the 12 tracks. Heavy touring and a dazzling array of innovative and off-the-wall material has made Lowcountry Boil one of the hottest acts on the East Coast today. The furious mandolin of Jevon Daly drives the sound, while 17-year-old prodigy Benjamin Vaught handles lead guitar duties. Ben finished high school at 15 and has been touring ever since. His intelligence and poise on stage conjures up the image of a seasoned veteran. Bassist Paul Leech provides the bouncy upright bass that keeps the crowd dancing, and Rich Militek rips the banjo. Together, their three and four part harmonies are a delight to the ear.
