This group of six music majors gone bad from Ohio University in Athens, OH, have been deviling out the euphoric sensation of dancing naked on your own deserted island since 2001. Bringing a blend of instrumentation and influence to their music, the band’s sound has been tentatively laid into the basket of acoustic-pop, while undergoing various interpretations, including being described as “volcanic-island dance music.” Laced with open-ended, witty lyrics, fresh hooks, and laid-back, memorable melodies, Longfellow continuously reinvents itself, while maintaining the group’s distinguishing characteristic of a tightly woven sound, capable of quick, but smooth transitions. Songs often lend themselves to personal interpretation, dealing with a variety of emotions and subjects, but often leave fans with smiles on the face.
The group took on its infantile beginnings in the summer of 2001. Singer-songwriter, Nick Long had been piecing together some rough sketches of songs and soon approached three of his fellow music majors in the School of Music at Ohio University. Soon after, Longfellow was born. Longfellow's first official public appearance was at a local microbrewery, called O'Hooley's, on Friday, October 18th, of 2001.
Since that time, Longfellow has expanded, adding two additional players. The group now consists of Grant Cambridge on latin percussion (formally on vibraphone), Geoff Goodhue on drums, Matt Harvey on keys, Nick Long on acoustic guitar and vocals, Jonah Powell on violin and lead guitar, and Zach Quillen on bass.
Longfellow has attraced a variety of excited listeners, but has been most widely accepted on the college front. Having played in bars, coffee shops, auditoriums, school assemblies, talent shows, competitions (a number of which they have won), festivals, and ice rinks, Longfellow now has its sights set on becoming a regularly touring act in the Midwest region. Longfellow lays claim to getting radio play in two places without really trying. The first, as may be expected, is in their hometown, on local station, Power 105.5. However, perhaps a bit more interesting is the radio play the group has received in the capital city of Brazil in South America. Local DJ, Antonio Augusto Cesar Junior became a fan of the band via their webpage and had this to say: “I love all the musics there are in that cd, so it´s amazing, fantastic, brilliant, perfect. Thank you very much forever. God bless you my friend in your musical life, you deserve good things forever.” After their contact with Antonio, Longfellow feels confident that somehow, things will fall into place.
