Currently gaining a reputation as a very individual recording artist, Junior Thompson has been honing his writing and performing skills for the last 30 years. Taking delta blues as a starting point and visiting jug-band, R&B, soul and even blue beat on the way, he has arrived at his own unique sound. In short it's dangerous music of the heart. In the words of one of his songs
“ Give me one minute and I’ll explain / How I got here the route I came/ Sometimes I walk/ Sometimes I crawl/ Sometimes I run/ Sometimes I fall/ But mainly I ride on the late night blues train”.
Hot Press, Ireland's main music paper, praised this combination of the refreshing and the familiar in its review of his debut album “Welcome Mister Blues”. Several tracks recently appeared on 'New Horizons' a compilation double CD of Ireland's finest current musicians, recorded direct to stereo at Galway Bay FM. This album received a 10/10 review in Hot press. Junior will also be featured on a soon-to-be-released album of new Irish blues along with Don Baker and The Mary Stokes Blues Band.
At the moment Junior's dividing his time between gigs in England and Ireland. This summer these included the blues festival at Castlebar, Ireland in early June and The Great British R&B Festival at Colne in late August. At Colne his performances on the fringe circuit were so well received that he has been asked to appear on the main stage next year. November 2000 saw Junior supporting Guy Davis in Dublin then doing a 7 date stint at the Populart in Madrid with his band. He’s back in Dublin to support Chris Smither in March then back over to Madrid for another residency
