Straight from the sullen banks of the river in New Orleans comes genre-spanning music, like placing an entire record store in a blender. This is not your John Mayer sort of solo act. From acoustic landscapes of folk to raw and powerful rock and roll, not many genres escape Josh Rowland's touch. The latest of his musical projects, Josh formed the backing band in June of 2003.
Most impressive about the songs are the lyrics, scored against the varying sonic landscape of the music. Allusion-laden and atmospheric in imagery, the words remind one of a more world-weary Dylan meshed with the stylings of such Beat and absurdist poets as Kerouac and Rimbaud.
Josh's band is comprised of a core lineup of four members: Josh on guitar/vocals/harmonica and a guitarist, drummer and keyboardist. The lineup is always open for expansion and some of the most versatile talent in Louisiana has had stage time with the band, from additional vocalists to bassists and percussionists. The sound the live band evokes swings steadily from mellow and dreamy to high-energy and rocking. It's great stuff to dance to as well.
Josh's albums and side projects explore an even wider range of aural possibilities, spanning from heavy metal to extreme experimental works and anti-folk. For anyone interested in an expansive and fresh experience in music, there's plenty to be found in Josh's works.
