Jango Monkey plays crafty original song-focused jam rock in the classic style of Phish and moe., with tinges of Pink Floyd, Beck, and Beatles thrown in. The band formed in 2004 in Atlanta, and consists of members of the now-defunct Atlanta jam band, the Tone Mutts. Musically the emphasis is on strong songwriting, complete with lyrics, hooks, and melody but with room for open improvisational jams.
Jango Monkey features the songwriting of Rob Platner, who also plays guitar, sings lead vocals, and occasionally also plays synth/piano and percussion. Tim Watts plays bass and synth, and provides backing vocals. Eric Martin plays stellar lead guitar, vocals and the occasional trombone. Scott Phillips keeps it tight on drums. Improvisational sections often feature dual guitar jams, with occasionally tasty synth.
The members of Jango Monkey have been gigging in the Atlanta area for over 6 years, and as a result have developed an extensive mailing list of fans. They also have a keen understanding that venues are in business to make money, and that it is up to the band to work hard to promote shows to ensure a successful night for both the band and the venue.
Jango Monkey (or the previous incarnation the Tone Mutts) have played the following Atlanta venues: Jake's Toadhouse, Brandyhouse, Red Light Cafe, Smith's Old Bar, Peachtree Tavern, C.J.'s Landing, East Point Corner Tavern, Emory University, and Piedmont Park. Most recently Terrapin Beer Co. sponsored a Jamfest at Jake's Toadhouse featuring Jango Monkey among others.
