One unique thing about Hellenkeller is the facelessness of the band. The anonymous spirit is ultimately captured in their live show. Their sets echo and hop through oddly enchanting, seamless songs which seem to have been scraped off the ocean floor; restless, huge and mesmerizing. So much is happening on stage that the audience can never be sure who s doing what. It s not about the individual players or the individual songs -It is about the sound. The boundaries of HK beats are subjective and ethereal. Harmonic over-takings never seem quite able to calm the allure and grandiosity of the rhythm. An elegant drum philharmonic matched by ambient word-less vocal and electronic wallpaper. Subtlety shifting the flavor of each trip, Hellenkeller weave and dip in to so many sub-genres and traditional sounds, they become an outfit completely sanguine when it comes to association and identity. One might glance sideways at Hellenkeller and see some full on studio-ratz, but these tweak!
-freaks prefer retro-futurist musicologists. Five musicians turned sonic programmers scoring passionate instrumental collages for beat hedons. Songs are conceived only after the sounds have manifested as a sea of twisting colors gasping for order. In the mixing process, the tracks are methodically introduced and the story unfolds. Hellenkeller applies the same reconstructive technique to the remixes they compose for other artists. The song is stripped and sampled and new parts are introduced to create a new entity born of the same DNA. Collaborations with other musicians and remix teams further blur the traditional lines and open the doors of progression. We dare you to go ahead and imagine an Internet connection screech re-mixed by Hellenkeller. It would end up ambient, seductive and groovy.
