Gnappy
Band Biography

  • From: Austin, TX
  • No. of Members: 4
  • Year Established: 1999

An explosive group from Austin, Texas, GNAPPY combines the driving funk sensibilities of Galactic with the trip-jazz moodiness of Medeski, Martin & Wood and the hip-hop vibe of Groove Collective. The result - an enigmatic mixture of psychedelia, be-bop and James Brown-influenced funk described as 'acid blazz & junk.'

GNAPPY'S debut album on Harlequin Records, released March 6, 2001, has received overwhelmingly positive reviews in the music press, including the Austin Chronicle ('Four Stars'), INSite Magazine ('A') and Relix Magazine. Jambase.com has described the band as 'one of the most impressive of a new generation of acid Jazz groups,' while the Lafayette Times writes 'Gnappy use funk and jazz as springboards for their own personalities, creating music that is at once smoky and ebullient . . . one gets the feeling that the music recorded here is only the tip of the quartet's live-performance iceberg.'

Last March, Gnappy was selected as a 'Featured Artist' by internet monster Napster, and held-over for an extra week due to listener demand. That promotion lead to an astounding 350,000 hits to Gnappy's website, launching the group into the public consciousness. The group has also scored at college radio, where their debut album has received airplay on over 115 stations nationwide.

Gnappy is presently focusing it's touring efforts in the Texas/Arkansas/Oklahoma/Louisiana region, with plans for an East Coast tour this fall.
