Gail & The Tricksters, a swingin' five-piece combo based in Nashville, make the simple and vibrant sound of rockabilly new all over again. That's partly because the band’s leader Gail Lloyd (vocals/rhythm guitar) is not afraid to do her own thing. A real maverick in the true spirit of original rockabillies like Andy Starr, Wanda Jackson and Carl Perkins, Gail mixes that classic rockabilly sound with some swingin' jump blues to create a style that is exciting, refreshing and thoroughly original.
'It's something of a mystery how a gal, born and raised in Hawaii like me, ends up in Music City doing rockabilly,' says Gail. 'But we've got to dance to that 'inner drummer' whatever the beat may be, right ?' So far, that beat has taken her not only to Nashville, but to several different countries. She has performed in Germany, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and even by the Sea of Galilee in the Holy Land. 'And wherever I go, whether they speak English or not, people pick up on that rockin' rockabilly rhythm,' adds Gail. 'One thing I love about rockabilly is its simplicity and its high energy, and audiences seem to relate to it; no matter where they come from, or how old they are, or what language they speak.'
While there’s something of a rockabilly revival happening these days, Gail & The Tricksters bring something different to the mix. What made those original rockabilly artists so exciting is that they were experimenting. That’s what I like to think that we're doing, too. Taking those elements -- rockabilly and blues and swing and country -- and putting them together in some new ways to make it fresh.'
