Simply put, Fat Paw is a psychedelic groove band, but a better description would be 'improvisational psychedelic desert music.' The style is closely associated with that of the Grateful Dead and Widespread Panic, considering that the improvisational guitar jams are the driving force behind the listeners' communal spirit, which has actually become quite reputable. Fat Paws' sound however, is indisputably and uniquely their own. A new genre altogether seems to have naturally developed by those forced to classify the sound, that being 'desert music,' a fitting description immediately recognized when listening to Wray's signature and dancing guitars. Doug Wright's vast knowledge and background in the acoustic standup and electric bass adds a fluidity and grooviness that cannot easily be matched. Drummer Jet Redd's energizing and driving rhythms and Rhett Card's transportational Hammond organ trips make the music that much more decadent and exhilirating.
Since its inception, Fat Paw has opened for such acts as Widespread Panic, Rat Dog (with Bob Weir, formerly of the Grateful Dead), Leftover Salmon and String Cheese Incident. Fat Paw continues to nourish a strong local and regional following, and plans to expand their nationwide in the upcoming year. Fat Paws lineup consists of Tim Wray on guitar and vocals; Doug Wright on the acoustic standup and electric bass; Jet Redd on drums; and Rhett Card on the Hammond keyboard and piano.
Fat Paw, a psychedelic groove band formed in the summer of 1993 by singer, songwriter and guitarist, Tim Wray, is a western-regional touring act based out of Salt Lake City, Utah. Two CD's have been released this far under Fat Paw's independent label; the first entitled 'Live! 4-28-95;' and the latest release, 'Illusions of the West.' Tim Wray's solo album 'Giving Up the Ghost' was released just last spring under the independent recording label SongHaus Music.
This band is unafraid of mixing sounds from the 'old school' with sounds of their own making. One of the band's most noted strengths, however, is Tim Wray's songwriting, which flows intelligently and mystically, his storytelling adding yet another dimension to the already ingeniously layered music. It is Fat Paw's rule to offer their music directly from their souls, and in turn, the audience receives it directly into theirs.
