Enola Fall
Band Biography

  • From: Hobart, Australia
  • No. of Members: 3
  • Year Established: 2001

ENOLA FALL is a 3 piece band form Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. Originally known as “Melatonin” the band is formed in early 2001 by drummer Adam D'Andrea, Bass player Kieran Holm and singer/guitar player Joe Nuttall.

In March 2001, the band records an experimental CD, full of weird noises and samples before actually playing any shows. Unreleased the self-titled 11-track CD graces only a few shelves around Hobart.A little later in the year ENOLA FALL add Matthew Moller on guitar and weird spacey sound effects. Moller saw the band play at a college show to 800 people (the first live performance) of which he later begged to join. Then followed a period of time spent gigging around Hobart and building up respect on the local scene, as the band road-tests sounds and writes some 30 new songs. The next CD is recorded in late 2001 and released in 2002. Titled 'The City in the Sea' it is released locally to a fair bit of appreciation and has since become one of the more popular local releases. Burning only 130 copies this CD-R is soon sold out.The following CD emerges as quiet and ambient with loud, scary bits in some places. Soft and melancholic with lyrics focusing on loss and desolation. It is recorded entirely at home, in a studio Enola Fall now calls “Fog’s Hill” after a long running joke in the band.

As ENOLA FALL continues to play live and build up a following around Hobart, a change begins to creep over their sound. A loud, aggressive and far more intense bunch of songs gets written and becomes part of the standard live set. Around this time another member is added, increasing the number to five and completing the line-up. Psam Parsons on keyboard, mandolin and samples and back up singing. The end of 2002 sees ENOLA FALL play the Falls Festival in Lorne, Victoria for what was to become the first of many tours away from Hobart. This gig marks a turn around point for the band. Not only does seeing and meeting various bands at the festival help shape and change ENOLA FALL’s live stage show, it also includes a lot of label interest and exposure and a chance meeting with famed producer Chris Thompson (Augie March, The Waifs). This meeting is an inroad to Triple J national radio and has sparked much needed airplay ever since. A mutual respect between Chris and the band soon followed….Since then, 2003 becomes somewhat a year of fortune and bad ENOLA luck. It containes a few surprises as well as the name change from “Melatonin” to ENOLA FALL. The release of the album It Always Comes To This, reflects that period of time both lyrically and musically. The title also reflects the up and down times of the band. The release of the CD to a huge crowd in a disused 1920’s ballroom in Hobart is supported by local friends “Fell To Erin” and “the Horror”. From this time everything happened very quickly:The highlights of 2003 include:- The first single off 'It Always Comes To This “You Can’t Go Home Again” debutes on Triple J’s Net 50 at no. 19, the first Tasmanian band ever to reach the chart.- Selected to play at the Falls Festival in Lorne, Victoria, by event organiser Simon Daly, for both 2002 and now 2003 in Marion Bay, as well as Tasmania’s annual Gone South Festival.- Being selected for Triple J’s Next Crop Artist for all of November, 2003- Supporting Something For Kate on their Tasmanian tour (October, 2003)- Recording a live set for Triple J’s Home and Hosed show with Robbie Buck with renown and loved producer Chris Thompson at ABC studios and Martin St Studios where much of the Waifs and Augie March’s album were recorded (July, 2003)- The Shameless Propaganda tour of Melbourne (a ten date tour, July, 2003)- Live set for the Mel and Charlie Show on Triple J (February, 2003)

The year 2004 is marked by exessive touring and another change in ENOLA FALL’s Line-Up (Psam and Matt moved away for work opportunities in other areas). Both are still good friends with the band. Now 2005 is upon us, and ENOLA FALL are back on stage as a 3-piece like in the days when the band was formed, but backed up by lots of new experiences they made during the last couple of years und with a definitely more mature sound. The year has already seen another tour of Melbourne, in February that included playing at such respected venues like The Tote and the Duke of Windsor. Also airplay in the U.S. and U.K. have been had, as well as much label/management interest worldwide. It seems that the year 2005 is going to be not only another year of surprises, but to one of the most exciting of the band’s history, too, as a brandnew record is expected to be released early 2005 and plans for the first European Tour are already made. Maybe 2005 is even going to be THE year for ENOLA FALL!?
