Few musicians have logged as many miles, played with as many musical giants, and kept on truckin’ as long as Dr. Dan Matrazzo, the keyboard genius behind such pioneering acts as Winter, the Aquarium Rescue Unit, and the Fiji Mariners. The Good Doctor is checking in and will be going farther off the beaten path than he’s ever been in his 25+ years as a professional musician. For the first time, Dr. Dan is combining all of his influences and his penchant for experimentation. The result is perhaps the first guitar-less power trio.
The evolution of Dr. Dan finds him journeying down a meandering path that has intersected with every genre and through three continents. Few teenage pop stars could have the resolve to stay as humbled and true to their roots as Dr. Dan. Even after his success as part of the Japanese pop sensation Char - with multiple television appearances and Asian tours - Dan took his musical aspirations to the next level and enrolled at the Berklee College of Music. It was here that he met burgeoning guitar virtuoso Steve Vai, the man who became Frank Zappa’s most celebrated guitarist. Dan also found future percussion master Jeff Sipe to complete the ensemble, and thus the group Winter was born shortly after Dan’s school days were over.
Dan’s travels then took him into the blues genre, where he toured and recorded with Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown. Their live release Real Life would be nominated for a Grammy. After touring with the blues great and playing in front of thousands, Dan met the man who would help guide him musically for the next decade. After a chance meeting at the Harvest Moon Festival, Dan built a relationship with underground legend Col. Bruce Hampton that brought him into the world of improvisational jam rock. Along with the Colonel, Dan recruited some of the most notable up & coming players in the scene, successfully starting the most lucrative jam rock festival in history. In retrospect, Dan helped to bring together some of the most revolutionary bands in the next wave of jam music.
Never one to be satisfied, the Good Doctor has put together an out of this world band with his knack for spotting talent and eagerness to test the barriers of conventional music. The members of Dr. Dan’s band literally have been playing music since before their balls dropped. Each one comes from a distinctive background that can be heard in the inspired music these men now make. This power trio aims not to be at the forefront of one single genre, but to travel around the worlds of funk, jazz, experimentation, jam rock, fusion, bluegrass, blues rock, and pop, bringing them together to create a truly unique sound that fans have dubbed “Space Funk.” The story and legacy of Dr. Dan is ever evolving. One thing is definite at a Dr. Dan show; “No butt will be sore after the Good Doctor checks in with his unmistakably unique sound!”
