Doctor Sparkles is both a solo artist and an ensemble act. The center piece of this act is glamourously dressed and glittered up Doctor Sparkles with his ukulele and sweet and at-times cartoonish voice. As a solo act Doctor Sparkles relies more on the sweet sound and humor of his ukulele arrangements as well as his gifts at vocal characterization. As an ensemble (typically upright bass, percussion and sometimes guitar), the island sound captured in his recordings comes through and is often danceable (reggae, tango, cha cha, samba, foxtrot, swing, etc.)
Doctor Sparkles is the re-creation of Kevin Patrick Baiko, a singer-songwriter based in the Virginia Beach area. Having released two folk-rock albums with Christian Mysticism undertones, he found himself at a bizarre crossroads of influences: 1. a new found appreciation for island music (following a Carribbean vacation), 2. a new found love for playing the ukulele (which was actually his first instrument - age 6), 3. a new found fascination with psychoactive plants, 4. a new found fondness for outlandish outfits and make-up, particularly the use of Glitter. What followed was a re-creative outpouring of songwriting on his ukulele and the inevitable transformation into a new stage persona: Doctor Sparkles.
In the many hats that Doctor Sparkles dons, he plays mad scientist, cartoon character, mystical chicken, beach bum, Santa's Elf, spaceship landing sequence, Mexican tomcat, fantasy crooner, Mr. Gonad wannabe, Latin cornball, mushroom chorus, New Age wise guy, upright bass, and a host to several infectious tropical attitudes. The ukulele is his favorite and featured instrument amongst the 30+ instruments he plays on his new album, Sail Away.
