After a chance meeting in San Francisco at the legendary Cafe International and their popular open mic series in May 1996, spoken word artist and poet Royal Kent and composer/ pianist Wendy Loomis decided to join creative forces and COPUS was born.
Royal Kent has been inspired by the poetic exploits of African American poets and spoken word artists as diverse as Langston Hughes and the Last Poets. His spoken word delivery has been described as similar to
that of the legendary Bob Kaufman and is also often compared to Gil Scott Heron. He created his unique flow/delivery as a solo poet, reciting in cafes open mics, clubs, poetry slams major reggae concerts.
Composer Wendy Loomis, has been compared with Debussy, Stravinsky, Chick Corea, Art Tatum, and Thelonius Monk! A rising star in and among women composers of the Bay Area, her broad scope and musical prowess are all-inclusive ... everything from energetic sound clips to sweeping film scores.
The COPUS sound is rounded out with by an assortment of instruments and superb players. Instrumentation includes strings, percussion and flute. Each original COPUS composition has a flavor all its own and flows effortlessly between genres…jazz, classical, blues, rock and world beat. The words and music fit like hand and glove creating, according to one reviewer, 'mind numbing ectasy' for the listener. The group has recently recorded their new single, entitled 'The Fool' and will be back in the studio early 2002 to complete the CD by the same name.
