Vancouver's only 'Psychedelic torch noir'act.Smokey, intense and burning.
Formed in 1990,COAL made their debut at the famed Commodore Ballroom, followed by a FILM NOIR MUSIC event at the Ridge Theatre, staged with 'Night of the Hunter' and a performance by COAL.
Soon after,Vancouver label Zulu Records released a Cd and cassette by COAL-S/T distributed in Canada and Europe. The band also produced a video for the track 'No Angel'
(which was aired on CMT,Bravo and MuchMusic)
and 'Sleepwalking'(an homage to the stark,silent-era German-expressionist films).
1994,Mint Records released a 4 song cd-ep compilation with a torchy cover of Motorhead's 'Ace of Spades' by COAL.The video for the track was placed into medium rotation on MuchMusic.Next,COAL was asked to record a supersession 'LIVE' on CBC Radio's international program 'Nightlines' w/David Wisdom.Back underground, the band then reformed. In 1998,after much tunneling and mining,COAL emerged into the light with a new independent enhanced CD'One Track Mind'.Including a video of the track 'Invisible Man' starring Mark Szabo and Bernie Morocco of the Transvestimentals.
COAL's second full length CD released on Coal Music label, produced by Marc L'Esperance, distributed by Indiepool.com and amazon.com.Buy it online!http://indiepool.com/coal
DESCRIPTION:Incandescent, spooky, sexy music with big drifting songs that generally avoid easy hooks instead building atmosphere out of rich, twangy guitars and hauntingly low cool-sweet vocals.
'This album is simply magical,breath-taking and ethereal....this Cd captivated me,and left me spellbound. This would be music worthy of being on the Galileo Mission. This Vancouver based band serves up dreamy richness and late night pensiveness with no drugs required. One of the best Canadian releases of 1998.'-Spill Magazine
'Listening to COAL's new album One Track Mind,is like having long, slow sex in a shower of honey...Nicole Steen sings out unabashedly, putting forth slightly(but not overly)twangy melodies;the end result is a Sundays-like softness but accompanied by a sweet, gentle swing.'-Exclaim Magazine
