The Imperial Orgy began with the simple of idea of creative freedom. Caeser Pink was bored with the state of pop music and wanted to recapture the excitement of the original free spirit of rock and roll. Then a student in the film department of the Penn State University, Pink gathered together a diverse group of musicians to bring his scheme into reality. His goal was not only to play whatever style of music he wanted, but also to mix the different art forms that interested him into the live shows.
After a few months of rehearsal in the bass player’s moldy basement with only an antiquated P.A. system to sing through, The Imperial Orgy debuted in a small club in a small town in the backwoods of Pennsylvania. Although the music was very rough around the edges, it was clear there was a special spark there. The usually disinterested audiences suddenly went wild. The crowd reacted in ways few local bands ever experience. If you doubt this writer's claims, the crowd video footage on The Imperial Orgy demo tape will tell the true story .
For the band’s third gig Pink decided to play a practical joke and stir up a little publicity. With this in mind he had some stationary and letterhead made with a set of praying hands and a logo that read ‘The Council Of Christian Youth.’ On the stationary he wrote a letter from a fictional youth group claiming that The Imperil Orgy were Satan worshippers who performed lewd sex acts onstage and handed out illegal drugs to their audiences. He sent copies of the letters to local churches hoping he might get a few protestors to come to the show holding signs.
What really happened was beyond anyone’s expectations. The town exploded. Without ever checking to see if there was any truth behind the letter, the church members barraged the newspapers and radio stations with complaints, the police were given anonymous tips that there would be a drug party, and callers harassed the club owner, threatening to riot if the show was not cancelled. On the last day before the gig the club backed down and cancelled the performance.
