Butterflies & Zebras is a remarkable collaboration by two guitarists who choose to 'paint in sound'. The music features experimental use of feedback, distortion and unorthodox technique. All sounds are produced live - no tape loops, edits, samples or cheats. Every sound is made by guitar.
Let’s face it, today's guitar music is boring, safe and stale; full of endless scales, modes and arpeggios. Even the more avant-garde and experimental forms tend to be over-produced; relying on studio tricks and computer loops that cheat the music of spontaneity.
“People think the guitar is dead”, says Norm Howard, lead guitarist of Butterflies & Zebras, “but it’s all there, waiting to be discovered.” He adds, “Improvisation and experimentation are the key.”
Playing against a backdrop of original fractal art, Butterflies & Zebras explore the use of unorthodox sounds in a musical context. Using only two guitars, live with no overdubs, they produce a rich tapestry of sounds. Without sacrificing melody, tone and structure, flutes, gongs, anvils, drums and winds appear, all produced by guitar.
