Denise Sosa & Steve Sheffron make up the New York City based duo/band Burgundy. They have been together since 1992, writing, arranging and producing their own music which led to their 1st CD release, 'Stages', in 1999. They equally contribute to the music, and often joke that they are each two halves of one brain. The music has been described as 'unique, yet timeless', 'a sound that has been missing for too long', 'reminiscent of The Carpenters with a modern day edge'. Each song stands on its own, from pop to jazz, ska to reggae grooves, even dance to piano ballads, 'Stages' wraps it all into 14 songs. They've satisfied every person's taste just enough to leave room for dessert :)
Most of the songs come quite easily & quickly for Steve & Denise. Denise writes the lyrics separately while Steve comes up with cool hooks and chord changes that define their style. Once together, Steve will play an idea he's been working on, and depending on the mood of it, Denise will apply the right lyrics to suit the song. She then sings the melody lines that her heart tells her to. They arrange the songs together, feeling the song out, seeing where a guitar solo should go, or where heavy strings should go or not go. It is a formula that works every time. They are still creating new songs but are concentrating on the promotion of 'Stages'. They will probably throw one of their new songs into a set here & there...guess you'll have to see a show to hear them for now!
Denise was born 7/21/76 in Brooklyn, N.Y. She currently resides there with her fiance and two hairy babies...their miniature pinschers. (they're tooooo cute). She was practically singing from the day she was born. With a history of musicians, singers and entertainers on both sides of her family, she was destined to have a life influenced by music. She strongly possesses a singer's soul and a songwriter's heart. Her main focus growing up was singing, yet she was encouraged to play instruments. 'Back then I was always told how people wouldn't take me seriously as a singer, especially a female singer. I remember being told, 'Make sure you learn everything you can about music, read it, write it, play any instruments you can, that way you'll never be labeled as a stupid singer.' That's what I was told, that's what I believed in, so that's what I did.' She was taught to play the guitar at 6 years old, but never felt as though it was the instrument for her. She started playing the flute at 9 in the school band. She quickly became a fluent flutist, yet wanted to learn so many other instruments, mainly the saxophone. As the years progressed, her flute playing continued to excel and she received many awards and medals. She played at Carnegie Hall as principal player of her section through borough-wide bands & orchestras. Her vocal studies strayed to the side for a while, partially due to the fact that she wasn't allowed to be a double-major and also because she started feeling the pressure of other people's skepticism. 'Whenever I'd mention how I'd want to still pursue singing as a career, people would try to tell me that music wasn't a 'real' job and it wasn't realistically possible. They tried directing me towards becoming something more 'real' such as a teacher, accountant, etc. They don't understand that if you have something like this in your blood there's nothing more 'real' than that.' She wrote her first 'lyrics' at age 16. She's been writing poems most of her life, as a way to escape into her own world. It didn't click until later years that they could double as lyrics! Some of them later became the lyrics to such singles as 'Love Seat', 'Images' and the title track off the album, Stages. She attended the 'Fame' high school (LaGuardia in NYC) and graduated in 1994. This was where she decided to study voice full strength. She had an unbelievably great experience at LaGuardia and most of her confidence and determination came from that school. She loved being surrounded by artists of every nature and that's where it became set in stone for her that music was the key to her happiness. She's been sailing toward greatness ever since :)
A lifelong Staten Island resident, Steve has been playing the piano for about 15 years. He is self-taught and attributes his songwriting to the various artists he listens to. He has played keyboards regularly for bands since 1990 ranging from cover bands to soft rock and hard rock. His musical start was playing the clarinet in the school band 17 years ago. That experience dampened his musical spirit. But then, at a friend's party a couple of years later, Steve was inspired to play piano just by watching the keyboardist playing there. From that point, he used his sight reading acquired from playing the clarinet and his vast knowledge of where middle C was on the piano to eventually play some almost recognizable melodies. He continued to combine his evolving talent with his knowledge of computers to start writing music. At first, many people laughed at his 10 minute 'masterpieces', as he would call them. Eventually, he learned to edit music and keep most songs to 3 or 4 minutes. Combining his knowledge of music and electronics hook-up obtained from his job, Steve bought one keyboard after another. He then finally purchased a mixer, digital 8-track recorder and the like. Credit card companies loved him. This allowed him to record and produce bands and better understand the recording process today.
