”To combine a feeling of contentment above any other with the knowledge of some kind of presence that cannot be explained in human terms. To take that one split second of your day when everything seems perfect, where everything seems in it’s right place, and extend it into a lifetime. To stand face to face with your darkest fear and your most mysterious state of infectious curiosity and remain completely optimistic.”
Mixing heavy rock while still maintaining catchy melodic lines defines New Jersey’s Beyond Mirth as a dark cloud that actually feels good. Their style is the result of four musicians boasting four diverse backgrounds brought together by a gifted front man who writes the songs that make the whole club sing. Songs such as “Open Up” and “Getting Me Nowhere” are the high-powered anthems that win over crowds. Frontman and songwriter Dave DeVoe wasted no time choosing music as his passion by the age of five. Joining right in with his family of musicians, he has studied piano, guitar, and voice giving him the vehicle to portray the music in his head. It was then that he began his first band, which eventually lead to the first Beyond Mirth, playing over 100 shows in 2 years at well known venues such as CBGB’s, Arlene’s Grocery, and The Stone Pony. The title track from their first EP had even landed itself in heavy radio rotation in Michigan, Chicago, and Phoenix. In 2000, Beyond Mirth had run its course, and Dave took some time off for various other projects. Approximately one year later, the death of a close friend sparked divine inspiration in Mr. DeVoe and auditions for the next Beyond Mirth began. After a tireless search, their immediate chemistry assured Dave that he had chosen the best musicians to bring his new sound to the enthusiastic audiences that meet them at every s! how. Lead guitarist Ed Aular hails from Venezuela where he heightened his musical chops at the Echeveria Lozano Music Conservatory. Making his move to New York City in 1994, Ed honed his style playing everything from R&B to classical, and although extremely well schooled as a musician, he feels that the streets of New York were his best classrooms, and brings a strong-willed persona to stage left at every show. Drummer Mike Higgins is currently studying music at New York University after being a successful percussionist for over 10 years. He has done everything from touring Europe with a symphony to performing with jazz combos. Mike’s eclectic mixture of influences gives Beyond Mirth the solidity and confidence that many bands lack. Bassist Gerard Toriello began his career in the biz as a guitarist, buzzing from band to band until he made the instrumental transition at a lightening speed. With a respect for music’s past as well as present, Gerard brings a refreshing approach to his instrument which will no doubt help Beyond Mirth secure their place in music’s future. Live performances are where they hash out their latest tunes are where this band earns their fans. Beyond Mirth has even been known to take a memorable cover like “Head Over Heels” by Tears For Fears in their dark rock fashion and bring it completely out of its element and into their own. This band’s tight knit deliveries prove that Beyond Mirth is no fluff act whose undying dedication to spreading their sound will surely do just that.
