Battery Apple
Band Biography

  • From: Baltimore, MD
  • No. of Members: 4
  • Year Established: 1997

Picture this: A supergroup made up of Les Claypool on bass, John Bonham on drums, Tom Morello on guitar and Mike Patton on vocals. If such a thing existed, it would have to be called Battery Apple. Battery Apple is slammin' groove rock with a funk under tone. Bass and drums create a strong, infectuous, hyperkinetic pulse while the guitar gives you a sucker-punch and the vocals and lyrics reveal a man clearly at peace with his cheerful insanity. While most bands of this genre rely on the popular 'Cookie Monster' style of screaming, Battery Apple's singer Floppy actually sings over the music. The effect is stirring to say the least. The music is aggressive yet slinky; dynamic and pummeling. A recent addition to the show is the 'Percussion Concussion' segment in which all 4 members play various instruments in a drum orchestra of syncopated pandemonium which segues seemlessly into one of their newer songs. A Battery Apple show offers more than just great music. The band uses video to spectacular effect; setting the mood for the cocktail of emotional release which changes from show to show. Each member has his own unique personality which shines on stage: Floppy (vocals) captivates the crowd with his lyrics and antics, yet rarely utters a spoken word onstage. Dave (bass) writhes around the stage like a komodo dragon on acid, coaxing bizarre tones from his fretless basses acting as occasional MC. Mac (drums) quite simply beats the living hell out of his drums and is the perfect visual foil to Floppy's hystrionics. Barry (guitar) exhibits looks of torture, anguish and ecstasy while he batters his guitars with his seemingly dislocated wrist.

Formed in 1997, Battery Apple have become one of Baltimore's most spectacular live attractions. Their bizarre and unpredictable stage show only accentuates their pummeling, groovular brand of heavy rock. In 1999, Battery Apple released a self-titled CD and won the 1st round of the Ernie Ball/Guitar Center Battle of The Bands 3, which garnered them a spot on 1999's Van's Warped Tour alongside Sevendust, Suicidal Tendencies and Blink 182 among others. This fall will see the release of a new CD titled '6-Pack Of Shame' as well as their on-screen debut in the film 'Wings Of Hope.' The film features cameo live footage of the band playing a song from their 1st CD which will also appear on the film's soundtrack. Thanks to their web site (www.batteryapple.com) the band has attracted scores of fans in over 16 countries. They will continue to play shows in the MD, DC, VA, PA, DE, NJ region in support of '6-Pack Of Shame' and dazzle audiences with their soulful blend of heavy groove and funk.

In early 2001, original Battery Apple singer Tommy Clark was replaced by the formidable Floppy John, formerly of Washington DC's Strawman. The change of voice was exactly what Battery Apple needed to complete their 2nd CD - '6-Pack Of Shame'. Floppy's soulful yet somewhat agitated vocals accurately match the frenzied hyper-chameleon rhythm section and sucker-punch guitars.

Battery Apple keeps in touch with the fans via their fan club - Apple Corps Int'l which boasts fans in 16 countries worldwide in addtion legions of fans stateside. Their strong internet presence continues to draw new fans daily who tire of the same old thang and hunger for some substance with their groove. The band loves to gig-swap with other bands and encourages like-minded groups to contact them.
