Built by Design, what can be said that hasn’t already; Raw, melodic, hard energetic rock straight out of Tampa Bay. Built by Design has grown from a modest pack of driven musicians, to one of the best live shows in the bay area in less than a year of their inception. Recently the group has been nominated for Best Hard Rock Artist and Best Hard Rock Album at The Hard Music Awards beside other event nominees such as Marilyn Manson, Nonpoint, The Genitorturers, Endo, Sister Kill Cycle, Crossbreed, The Glitterguns and many more. The band also made it to the Florida finals for Germany's Emergenza Festival.Built by Design’s Dave Baca and Marque Shultz started playing together back in 1996 in a small town in North Carolina. The band, Nihl 4/7, was a launching pad for what you know today as Built by Design. The two met through a mutual friend while trying to get a band going in Havelock, NC. Even from the start there was a certain bond that was unexplainable. After solidifying the lineup and ironing out material, Nihl 4/7 started wowing the local crowds. After one year and many great shows at local clubs, Dave had to move to Tampa and Nihl 4/7 was no more. Marque continued to stay in North Carolina, and after a year of taking over lead vocal duties with several local bands such as Low Pop Drag and Mantis, he too moved away to Long Island, NY. The two kept in touch and could feel that the magic that once loomed in Nihl 4/7 had to rekindle. In November 2000, Marque moved to Tampa Bay to start a group with Dave. Writing new material came rather easy, but trying to find the right rhythm section was a task. All the while in Minnesota, Todd Lyle was becoming an accomplished drummer in his own right, playing with bands such as The Villains and Full Throttle, while also supporting national acts like Linkin Park, Sum 41 and others. Bassist Chizuk, already in Tampa, was then playing with local bands ACID9 and Beyond Oblivion, trying to break out of the nu rock mold. In 2001, Todd, wanting to escape the harsh winter’s of Minneapolis also moved to Tampa. The group, still unnamed, decided that they needed an alias. At a friend’s party in mid 2002, Marque and Dave started looking for a moniker that would fit the music, while also not limiting the group’s image. The opening of the yellow pages is how it all happened. Marque opened the phone book and started looking; Dave decided the dropping of a pen might be better. After dropping the pen on a few floral arrangement shops and appliance stores, it finally fell on an automotive advertisement. Built by Design was the name on where the pen landed, and so the legacy started. Finally after several changes in the lineup, and at their wit’s end, Marque and Dave found bassist Chizuk through a former drummer in early 2003. Chizuk instantly brought a passion and feeling to the material that was missing. Built by Design kept writing material, and in late 2003, while still playing gigs with former drummers, finally found Todd Lyle at a local pub. Todd, after taking a year off from playing, decided that Built by Design was a group that he could contribute his unique style to. Built by Design was alas at 100%. No matter how far you look, you will not find another Built by Design. The words, rhythm and pure passion that is reflected through their songs are enough to make you feel your deepest emotions, and your strongest rage all at the same time. Built by Design break all the molds and are like no other, they are the new, raw, melodic, hard and gritty face of rock for the 21st century.
