Borialis has been evolving since 1996. It started with Chi-Flow(vox,guitar,keys), E-Bass(bass,vox), Jay-Rock(drums), and Crow(guitar, keys, vox). They stewed together their own mix of Hip-hop, Reggae, Funk, R&B, and Rock into a sound they call 'White Trash Hip-Rock'. In 1997, they expanded their soundscape (and roster) by adding Doc NU (turntables) and Justice (2nd Guitar, vox). This allowed Chi-Flow to sing/rhyme without restriction. The name Borialis initially means 'the north/ or northern', but they used it as a symbol of uplifting/enlightenment (to look up). They're taking this message across the globe.
They started with the obligatory local gigs(Stone Pony, Brighton Bar,Birch Hill,etc...), but soon found themselves immersed with larger entities. August 1998, they performed at the 'DAY IN THE GARDEN' Festival in Bethel, NY (the ORIGINAL Woodstock site). The 3-day festival included performers such as Lou Reed, Don Henley,Joni Mitchell,Richie Havens,Ten Years After,Stevie Nicks,Ziggy Marley, among others. The day that Borialis performed was geared toward the younger crowd. Borialis opened the day for Dishwalla, Goo-Goo Dolls, Joan Osbourne, Third Eye Blind, Marcy Playground, and The Flys. In between all that they had been frequent on the NYC scene (Bitter End,Brownies,Lion's Den, Arlene's Grocery,etc...). Borialis was gaining recognition as a great live act, with great songs, that soon caught the eyes and ears of several interested record labels. At this time, they were taken down to the Famous SIGMA SOUND STUDIOS in Philly (the originator of 'the Philly Sound'), to record their demo CD. It was recorded under the careful ear and supervision of Joe & Mike Tarcia, and produced in part by David Ivory Productions (The Roots). Additional tracks were recorded and added at the SCUBA recording studio in NY. In mid 1999, Borialis released their CD 'Straight Out the Rug Room'. The title is a humorous inside joke about Chi-Flow and E-Bass' school experiences.
The band had still been gaining attention all this time, and are now in the mist of trying to get themselves out worldwide. Keep eyes and ears out for this upcoming band.
