Autonomy delivers an ominous, deliberate and dark sound with intense power and then riddles it with deep lyrical explorations. Their trademark riff-recipe is held in stark contrast to a remarkably literate songwriting approach and devotion to melody demonstrated by singer/songwriter/bassist Ether. In this way, Autonomy has attracted quick attention and adulation by making delicate and subtle points with brute force. Intense, emotional, and expressive guitar parts delivered by Billy Graczyk are balanced with the heavy-handed and gutteral distortion of Ether's lead bass approach. Autonomy manages to lace this all together with electronic drum programs, effects, and multimedia stage imagery. The fullness and raw power of the resulting sound and imagery suggest big things to come from this amazing Minneapolis band.
Autonomy believes stongly in the growing wave of energy surging across the Minneapolis/St. Paul music scene and has become a key player in promoting unity amongst fellow artists. Where most bands flee to the empty promises of New York's record deals and L.A.'s promotion machines, Autonomy chose to stand it's ground and ignite their local music scene before moving on to greater conquests. The band's debut album adds credibility to this mission, and signals the rebirth of Minneapolis rock.
Autonomy formed in the summer of 2001, and released a debut EP/demo that fall. On January 1st, 2004 Autonomy released their debut full-length CD (self-titled).
