Fairchild’s musical diversity extols the singer-songwriter’s freedom to defy musical categorization and draw at will from any idioms that suit the song. Sensitive introspection, a sharp melodic radar, rock and roll’s rebellious energy, and an intuitive feel for the understated power of an acoustic guitar and a good lyric all inform her music and distinguish Amy as a dynamic performer. According to Kim Fowley, 'If Tom Petty and Sarah McLachlan had a baby, she’d be it.'
Amy Fairchild launched her musical career in Northampton, Massachusetts; lending her superlative voice, self-taught guitar riffs and unique songwriting to several established local bands. She developed a portfolio of original tunes and was fronting her own band—a band that soon became one of the hottest acts in the region. Her debut CD, She's Not Herself, self-produced and released in 1996, was voted Best Album of the Year by several local papers. In the spring of ‘99 she won the New York City Lilith Fair Talent Competition, earning the right to perform at the Jones Beach Amphitheater with the likes of Sheryl Crow, Chrissie Hynde, Sarah McLachlan and others. In May of 2001 she garnered another award, the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk Competition, joining an impressive list of past winners that includes Lyle Lovett, Nancy Griffith, Joe Ely and Steve Earle. She was invited back as a main stage performer for Kerrville in 2002. She appears on, among others, ! Cliff Eberhardt’s “Mona Lisa” and Dar Williams' “End of Summer.” Her song “Counting Angels” will be included on a new compilation “A Garland For Linda” which benefits the Linda McCartney Foundation, to be released in February 2002 both in the U.S. and Great Britain.
Currently residing in New York City, she is performing and filling clubs throughout the city and getting ready to tour nationally to support a new CD. Mr Heart, will be released on February 14th 2002. The disc has noted producer Adam Steinberg at the helm, and performers include drummer Gary Burke and bassist Graham Maby from Joe Jackson’s band, Sebastian Steinberg from Soul Coughing and some other very special guests.
