Alan Smithee
Band Biography

  • From: Los Angeles, CA
  • No. of Members: 5
  • Year Established: 2002

Alan Smithee… for years, his name has been associated with some of the worst movies ever made. 'Born' in 1967, when the Directors Guild of America needed a pseudonym to use for when directors wanted their names removed from a bad movie, Alan Smithee has since been credited on such horrible films as Hellraiser: Bloodline, The Tony Blair Witch Project, and most notably, Putz.

However, while Alan Smithee's legacy as a director carries with it a negative connotation, the music industry will soon praise his name, as he has recently been 'reborn' in the guise of a kick-ass rock band! This band, Alan Smithee, is now poised to take the planet by storm with its combination of great pop/rock tunes and high energy stage shows.

Comprised of David Jonelis (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), Matthew Emmer (lead guitar), Paul Brantley (bass guitar), Mike McCurdy (drums), and Frank Haggerty (keyboards), Alan Smithee has been making quite an impact on the rock music scene ever since its creation. The band formed when singer-songwriter Jonelis, based out of Los Angeles, went searching for the perfect bandmates. This search led him to Oregonian bassist Paul Brantley, who had until recently been playing with Capitol Records recording artist Kendall Payne, and guitarist Matthew Emmer, who had just left one of Wisconsin's biggest rock bands to move to Los Angeles. The addition of jam-band veteran Frank Haggerty from New Jersey in December of 2003 and drummer Mike McCurdy of LA in July 2004 completed a lineup diverse both in its geography as well as its musical backgrounds.

Although Alan Smithee is not yet signed to a record contract, its members have already achieved much success. The band has entered and won multiple Battle of the Bands competitions, its songs have been featured twice as 'Song of the Day' on George Martin's Garageband.Com website, and its members have shared the stage with acts as diverse as Something Corporate, Sarah McLachlan, Coolio, Mandy Moore, Jewel, and 3LW. Additionally, the band has amassed a strong local following both in Los Angeles and Buffalo, and its reputation is quickly spreading as people across the nation learn of the band's music and electrifying stage show. However, in addition to their strong songwriting abilities and stage presence, the members of Alan Smithee all possess an undying commitment to excellence and an unquenchable thirst for success, and it is these traits which will undoubtedly bring the band the rockstardom that they so desire. Soon, the name Alan Smithee will no longer be synonymous with bad movies, but will rather be associated with an amazing rock band.
