We are the Acoustic Vibration Appreciation Society, an ensemble of musicians who compose and perform original instrumental music together all over the world. Our instruments are upright acoustic bass, flute, violin, bouzouki, mandolin, banjo, dobro, and chin-cello. We play original numbers of our own composition in a variety of styles ranging from strictly structured folk traditions of Ireland, Scandinavia, Venezuela, China, and Appalachia to all-out improvisational frenzies with Gypsy, Jazz, Classical European, and Bluegrass colour. We play instrumental music, sometimes with Spike Jones-like comic flare, but have been known to sing bluegrass and old time tunes late in the evening, 'crowd willing.
Ten years ago three of us were fortunate to have been a part of Hume Fogg Academic, a public education project still thriving today in Nashville, Tennessee. When we were freshmen we found our first musical icons right there in our high school. The Acoustic Vibration Appreciation Society, a school-sponsored club that was run by students for students, offered us our first opportunity to perform any music we wanted in front of an audience. Now, years later, we carry the name and spirit of A.V.A.S. with us to this project.
Already we have performed in high school auditoriums and university theaters as well as major music festivals and late night venues. The shows have been well received to say the least. With styles ranging from northern European reels to Eastern trance music and from traditional American bluegrass to highly arranged contemporary jazz, AVAS can appeal to all types of music lovers. The sky is the limit as we continue to create. It is our pleasure to bring our project to you the listener and fellow lover of the arts. Through sharing we can all appreciate the world of acoustic vibrations together, as one greater society.
With a common belief that music transcends language barriers and is the voice of cultural diversity, AVAS presents to you a peace offering from the Blue Ridge Mountains.
