77 Jefferson is a collection of musicians that love reggae and enjoy playing it. Influences include: Bob Marley and the Wailers, Burning Spear, Lee 'Scratch' Perry, King Tubby, Sublime, Long Beach, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Led Zeppelin, The Police, Chad Sexton, Chad Smith, Carlton Barrett, James Brown, and many, many more.
77 Jefferson began when the Castillo brothers, Joel and Ryan, crossed paths with Miles Brown and Mike Dunn while playing shows together with different bands. A jam was set up and then many more jams followed. A reggae sound was developed that utilizes roots rock, rocksteady, and dub reggae from the late 60's through mid 70's, complimented with a youthful and progressive interpretation.
The band has released an independent 7-song ep, 'Songs For Selene.' Currently, the band is finishing their debut full-length album, which is scheduled for release in September of 2007. In just one year the band has played over 60 shows all over the midwest and has participated in four festivals: The Crossroads Music Festival (KC), 420 Jah Roots Festival (Springfield), Jah Roots Jam Fest (Springfield), and Reggae by the River (KC).
